Kernels fall to Brandon Valley

BRANDON—Plagued by errors, Mitchell fell to Brandon Valley 8-3 in a high school baseball contest on Monday.

The Kernels and Lynx both had seven hits apiece, but Mitchell committed five errors in the five-run defeat.

"We had a few errors and a couple other things that maybe aren't called errors," Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. "But plays that kind of swing the game. Plays you might expect guys to make and then don't happen. They are not called errors, but they kind of swing the game."

The Kernels (6-9) trailed the entire contest, but cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth inning on a Drew Kitchens RBI single.

But the Lynx tacked on three more runs in the fourth and later scored two in the sixth inning. Brandon Valley scored all three of its runs in the fourth with two outs.

"We scored one run to get it to 3-1 and then with two outs there, they were able to put those extra runs on the board, which was key for them obviously to build a lead," Norden said. "They were just able to continue to play and add to their lead the entire game."

Brandon Valley's Trey Hubers had a monster game with five RBI's in a 3-for-4 hitting performance at the plate. Brandon Valley pitcher Weston Struble kept the Mitchell batters at bay. He struck out 10 batters, scattered seven hits and gave up three runs (two earned).

Briggs Havlik, Austin Kerr, Hunter Stahle and Koby Larson all hits for the Kernels. But Norden is looking for offensive production from the entire team.

"We just need to be able to get more guys contributing on offense," Norden said. "We just need to get everybody contributing in one way or another at the plate."

Havlik was tagged with the loss, giving up three hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out two batters.

The Kernels play at Yankton in a 6 p.m. contest.
