Marlins hockey hosting Pink the Rink night
The ice at the Mitchell Activities Center will soon look a little different.
That's because the Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team is hosting its inaugural Pink the Rink night on Jan. 20 at the Mitchell Activities Center.
Kourtney Denne, one of the event's coordinators and wife of Mitchell boys varsity head coach Cody Denne, said the Sioux Falls Stampede and Rapid City Rush, as well as other minor league hockey teams, hold similar events and that's where the idea for the Pink the Rink came from.
"I brought the idea to the board last year and thought it'd be great for Mitchell hockey," Denne said. "Pierre did something similar and we said 'Why not do it in Mitchell?' "
Four games will take place, with the Pee Wee teams facing Oahe at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., followed by the boys junior varsity and varsity taking on Rushmore at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively. Scheduling didn't allow for the Marlins girls varsity to participate this year, but Denne said they are looking to add both varsity teams to the event next year.
One of the highlights for the event is that the ice at the MAC will be colored pink for the event.
"It's about a four-hour process to paint the ice," Denne said. "The ice will be pink all day Saturday and probably most of the day Sunday."
Admission will be $6 for adults and $2 for children, while people can purchase a spot on the glass for $2 to honor someone affected by cancer. Honorees will also be recognized between the JV and varsity games. Other activities at the event will be a 50/50 raffle, a chuck-a-puck throw and pink jerseys.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Avera Queen of Peace Foundation Cancer Care Fund. Money raised will be used to fund technology and equipment upgrades, patient travel assistance and radiation burn creams. Denne said she's hoping to raise $4,000 to $5,000 at the event and added she's sold about 90 T-shirts for the event already.
"Avera works pretty closely with hockey throughout the year," Denne said. "The plan is to make it a yearly commitment. Come support Mitchell hockey, we want as many people there as we can."
