Mitchell CTE team takes top honor at ProStart Invite

A team of Mitchell CTE students is headed to a national competition after taking top honors in the 11th annual South Dakota ProStart Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday in Mitchell.

Mitchell's CTE team took first place in the culinary competition, which earned it a spot in the national competition April 27-29 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Team members are Cody Hagemeyer, Kayla Kluth, Jerry Madsen, Madison Price and Fae Thompson. Their instructor is Cindy Gerlach.

In the culinary competition, teams of students demonstrated knife skills and then had 60 minutes to prepare a three-course gourmet meal without the use of electricity. Some of the state's premier chefs scored the teams on numerous factors including presentation, taste, sanitation and teamwork.

The ProStart Invitational is a joint effort of the South Dakota Department of Education, the South Dakota Retailers Association and the South Dakota ProStart Advisory Committee. In South Dakota, 17 schools offer the ProStart program.
